You bring up an interesting point. There are times when the product or service sells itself, and it just needs to be detailed (or explained) by the rep. There's a big difference between detailing a product and being able to sell and close a deal.
We had hired one of our buddies, a pharmaceutical sales rep, into our tech company, and this individual was so cocky and talked himself up so much about his ability to sell, we gave him a top position and a high paying salary in our company. He was good at detailing, but couldn't make a sale or close a deal to save his life... or our company for that matter.
His lips did a lot of moving and we heard a lot of noise, but we never got any results.
If we were in the lumberjack business and if I were to send him out to cut down a tree, he would probably beat it with a stick, make a lot of noise and look busy... but at the end of the day, the tree would still be standing.
Obviously we didn't have a stellar product or service that sold itself... such as the one mentioned in your example. In your case, you didn't need a salesman, you needed a detailer. In our case, we didn't need a detailer, we needed a salesman that could close deals.

I found out this really interested history... and really help full for me...
I work in A Surf camp in Costa Rica.. I have a year working here... as you can see my English is not good enough. I start to work here as a web designer assistant, doing Banners an flash things... something that I really like to do .. but I guess that I'm not good in that area, but I keep working hard, to learn everyday something new, I love to learn... what happened was that one of our sellers goes for vacations and my boss need a persons in sale office, so I start to do that without knowing anything about it.. and believe me I hate it at the first time... !! But them I start to make sales .. in my first week I make my first big sale.. of $10.000 I was really exited about it... by the end of the months I was selling over $60.000 ... really good for a new guy. I thought that I just will be in sales for one month.. but my boss let me here in sales office.... !!
and I make a big one of $25.000... Not bad.
Now I want to sell for real, I want to learn the real sellers sell... cause Im not a big one, But I will love to learn how to be a big one... the past month I sold the %85 of all this place.
So I think that something pleople find a road that they just don't know, and is amazing how life turns you in the right direction.. some people take that direction some people don't.. anyway I will love if someone help me to go in this direction with good words and advice... I will really apreciate... !!
