I was watching an old episode of Leave it to Beaver on my replaytv, and in this episode.... Wally and Beaver got a horse as payment for helping out at a carnival. They had to sell the horse, and this one dude comes over to buy the horse. Wally asked him what he was gonna do with the horse, and the dude says... "I've got a rendering plant." Then Wally says... "Here's your money back Mister... give me back my horse."
That aroused my curiousity. What the heck is a rendering plant? So I went to Google and looked it up, and I found some nasty information about rendering plants. Ignorance is bliss - that's for sure!
Basically, rendering plants take all the dead animals, meat market rejects, etc. and process it "meal" and fed to cattle, pigs, fish, etc. YUCK. Stuff like maggots, animal tags, flea collars, plastic, are ground up with everything else.
--The cattle that so many folks eat every day not only fatten on the flesh of their fellows, but they also feed on the manure of other species. Feast your eyes on this information from the U.S. News and World Report: "Chicken manure in particular, which costs from $15 to $45 a ton in comparison with up to $125 a ton for alfalfa, is increasingly used as feed by cattle farmers despite possible health risks to consumers... more and more farmers are turning to chicken manure as a cheaper alternative to grains and hay."
Anyway, if you want to get grossed out... here's the info I found on rendering plants and health.
BON APETITE !!!
